Curriculum

After completing the Master's Program Material science and technology the graduate is able:

• to form the systematic and analytical approach for solving practical mechanical engineering tasks and other more abstract engineering problems especially from the field of material science
• to utilize the research-oriented approach for solving the tasks of product design, material selection and material development or production design
• to form the overall picture about the importance of material selection and the required solutions of production technology as a part of the multi-disciplinary design process of products
• to form the overall understanding about how to analyze and integrate the aspects of reliability, manufacturability and material selection of structures or machine elements dealing with metallic, composite, nano, hybrid and adaptive materials
• to apply the principles of modelling of metallic and composite materials
• to utilize modelling tools to predict process-microstructure-properties-performance relations of metallic and composite materials used in different engineering applications
• to understand the importance of materials and manufacturing processes in P2X technologies and SDGs.
• to explain the physical characteristics and mechanical properties of metals
• to predict and analyze the macrographs and microstructures of metal samples and welded joints and identify fundamental principles and practices of welding metallurgy
• to demonstrate heat treatments and their effects on metals and apply the knowledge of materials behavior in welding for different applications in practice
• to understand the influences of material selection to the product design and define concepts and entities related to high performance products and utilize the benefits of the use of nano and hybrid materials
• to characterize properties of selected adaptive materials and know how selected adaptive materials are manufactured
• to understand the importance of the adaptive materials technology for conserving material and energy resources
• to form and deepen the overall understanding of material properties and their applicability for various manufacturing processes and apply various manufacturing methods to advanced materials processing, incl. packaging manufacturing
• to utilize the possibilities of additive manufacturing in product development, prototyping and part manufacturing also from the viewpoint of material selection
• to select sheet metal materials and coatings used in sheet metal products (pre-coated materials, surface treatment processes used in sheet metal products)
• to understand the basic concepts of circular economy, knowledge on materials flow (raw materials, processing, manufacturing until end-of-life recycling and re-usage), issues and drivers for changes.

Facts

- This is a Master of Science in Technology (M.Sc. Tech.), (Diplomi-insinööri in Finnish) degree amounting to 120 ECTS credits
- Higher university degree gives eligibility to apply for scientific doctoral studies
- Contact teaching, full-time studies of 60 ECTS per academic year.

Degree Structure

The Master's degree (120 ECTS) consists of core studies, specialisation studies, minor studies and elective studies. A Master's Thesis and a seminar is included in the specialisation studies.
