Learning outcomes:

The Master’s Programme in Digital Social Sciences will enable you to critically evaluate today and tomorrow’s societal and political challenges from a variety of theoretical perspectives including new digital technologies. The programme will also equip you with various methodological skills embedded in social science research to mobilise an array of data to investigate these challenges. Additionally, the programme will offer complementary opportunities to learn digital skills that will enhance your analysis of these challenges. Furthermore, the programme presents you with opportunities to apply your knowledge and skills beyond the confines of the classroom. Together, the M.Soc.Sc in Digital Social Sciences will prepare and embolden you to make nuanced, informed and empirically grounded decisions to solve today and tomorrow’s challenges.


Students who have completed their M.Soc.Sc. degree in Digital Social Science are able to:

  • Critically evaluate current and incoming societal and political challenges by mobilizing a range of theoretical perspectives supported by the analysis of empirical data.
  • Understand the challenges and opportunities presented by current and emerging digital technologies to our societies.
  • Make nuanced, informed and empirically grounded decisions that contribute to addressing current and incoming societal and political challenges including the ones presented by new digital technologies.

  • Degree Master of Social Sciences (M.Soc.Sc.), (Yhteiskuntatieteiden maisteri in Finnish)
  • Higher university degree, gives eligibility to apply for scientific doctoral studies
  • Extent 120 ECTS credits

The Master's degree (120 ECTS) consists of core studies, language studies, advanced specialisation studies and multidisciplinary studies in critical systems of the society. The Master's Thesis and Seminar is included in the advanced specialisation studies. Elective studies can be any courses offered by LUT if the required prerequisites are fulfilled. Studies in other universities/from abroad may be included upon application, too.
