Learning outcomes:

The master’s program in Digital Social Science specializes in human factors and socioeconomic impacts of traditional and emerging digital technologies. The program considers societal changes in the digital age and how digital technologies have integrated into the economy and our daily lives. Digital technologies are examined as a medium for people’s and societies’ social behavior and as the target of interaction. The program includes aspects of well-being and the social sustainability of digital transitions and their political economy.


Students who have completed their M.Soc.Sc. degree in Digital Social Science are able to:

  • understand the impacts of digital technologies on people’s behavior and well-being and the function of societies
  • examine digital technologies as unique environments for social behavior
  • examine interaction with technologies from the perspective of human and social factors
  • access political and economic-related aspects of digital transformation
  • apply social scientific theories on traditional and emerging technologies and evaluate the current research in this field
  • apply innovative and problem-solving thinking and social scientific knowledge on designing, implementing, and managing digital technologies and environments in practice.

  • Higher university degree, gives eligibility to apply for scientific doctoral studies
  • Extent 120 ECTS credits

The Master's degree (120 ECTS) consists of core studies, language studies, advanced specialisation studies and multidisciplinary studies in critical systems of the society. The Master's Thesis and Seminar is included in the advanced specialisation studies. Elective studies can be any courses offered by LUT if the required prerequisites are fulfilled. Studies in other universities/from abroad may be included upon application, too.
